Meanwhile, Ip’s wife, Wing-sing, is diagnosed with cancer and has only a few months left to live. Ip tries to hide this from his son and spends more time with his wife. He also takes up a job as a waiter at a hotel to earn more money for her treatment. However, his work and his duties as a martial arts master prevent him from spending enough quality time with her.
One day, Ip is challenged by Cheung Tin-chi, who has been secretly working with Ma to frame Ip for bribing the police. Ip accepts the challenge and they agree to fight at a shipyard. There, they are ambushed by Ma and his men, who intend to kill them both. Ip and Cheung join forces to fight their way out of the trap. Ip spares Ma’s life and tells him to leave Hong Kong for good. Cheung, however, is dissatisfied with the outcome and still wants to prove himself better than Ip.
Ip is then invited by the headmaster to attend a dance performance by his son at school. He arrives late and misses the performance, but is comforted by Wing-sing, who tells him that she is proud of him and their son. She also reveals that she knows about her condition and urges him not to blame himself. They share a tender moment before she passes away in his arms.
Some time later, Ip receives an invitation to a public ceremony from Cheung Tin-chi, who has opened his own martial arts school. There, Cheung publicly challenges Ip to a final duel to determine who is the true Grandmaster of Wing Chun. Ip agrees and they decide to have an old-fashioned fight on a tabletop. The fight is witnessed by many other martial arts masters, including Tin Ngo-san and Bruce Lee.
The fight is intense and evenly matched, with both fighters displaying their skills and respect for each other. However, Ip eventually gains the upper hand and knocks Cheung off the table, winning the fight. Ip helps Cheung up and tells him that he has already proven himself as a worthy martial artist and does not need to pursue the title of Grandmaster. He also tells him that Wing Chun is not about winning or losing, but about cultivating one’s character and inner peace.
Cheung realizes his mistake and apologizes to Ip for his arrogance and hostility. He also closes down his school and sends his son back to Foshan to learn traditional Wing Chun from Ip Chun. Ip returns to his normal life with his son and continues to teach Wing Chun to his loyal students. He also keeps in touch with Bruce Lee, who has become a successful actor in America.
The film ends with a montage of scenes from Ip Man’s life and legacy, as well as a tribute to the real Ip Man and his wife.
